Even though it’s only the first week of the NFL season, at least one matchup should feature a pair of potential contenders in the AFC when the Pittsburgh Steelers head to Buffalo to face the Bills.
The Steelers are going to look to start their season differently than they ended last year, when Pittsburgh lost five of its last six games. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger struggled significantly down the stretch, but he and the team reworked his contract over the offseason so that he could return for 2021 as a 39-year-old passer.
The Bills, meanwhile are looking to build on last season, in which they went 13-3 and came up just short of the Super Bowl with a loss against the Chiefs in the AFC championship game. Quarterback Josh Allen is getting consideration as one of the trendy preseason picks to become league MVP and Buffalo is now widely considered to be one of the powers in the conference.
These two squads have faced off in each of the previous two seasons, with Buffalo having won both of those contests.
“We know that it’s gonna be a tight game,” Allen said Wednesday. “Last couple of years, obviously, they’ve been kind of boxing matches, taking a couple hits here and there, giving them out. They’re extremely well-coached, they’re a very talented group on defense, they got a Hall of Fame quarterback over there so we got to be on top of our game and go out there and try to execute to the best of our abilities.”
