The US recently held a meeting with key allies to discuss the national security risks associated with connected vehicles.
Not only does the US want to prevent the flow of Chinese EVs entering the domestic market, but the Biden administration is also considering banning Chinese software from locally sold vehicles with Level 3 and above autonomous systems.
The US Commerce Department is expected to propose a ban in the coming weeks. Such a rule would not only prevent the local sale of autonomous and connected vehicles with Chinese software, but would effectively ban many Chinese-made autonomous prototypes being tested on American roads.
According to Reuters, the proposal would force automakers and their suppliers to check whether their software was developed by a foreign organization of concern, including China. In a statement, a Commerce Department spokesman said it was “concerned about the national security risks associated with connected technologies in connected vehicles.”
