Jessica Pegula made her first Grand Slam final appearance at the U.S. Open last week, thrilling crowds with dramatic upsets and nearly winning the prestigious title.
Although she ultimately lost, the 30-year-old American made a strong showing and led a resurgence in U.S. women’s tennis. Pegula is currently ranked third in the world after an impressive appearance at the Open, having also made quite the splash at the Paris Olympics as part of Team USA, alongside her close friend (and on-court rival) Coco Gauff.
But as it turns out, sporting brilliance is something Pegula is more than used to—albeit on the football field rather than the tennis courts.
The Grand Slam finalist is, in fact, the heiress to a multibillion-dollar sporting empire thanks to her parents, Terry and Kim Pegula, who just so happen to own NFL team the Buffalo Bills as well as the city’s NHL team, the Buffalo Sabres. The couple have an estimated net worth of $7.7 billion.
The family has roots in upstate New York—Pegula was born in Buffalo, NY, in 1994 and spent her early years in Pittsburgh, PA. However, after she demonstrated talent in tennis, her family moved to South Carolina, so she could benefit from high-level coaching. Pegula turned pro in her teens in 2009.
