The Oscars will once again be postponed for the next year by one month. The 2021 Academy Awards was a very peculiar ceremony that was delayed two months from its standard February date due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For considerations to safety protocols, the show was held at Los Angeles Union Station rather than the customary Dolby Theatre. Due to the postponement of the award show, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences extended the eligibility period for films to qualify for the 2021 Oscars, a change that helped many movies including Best Picture-nominee Judas and the Black Messiah.
Per Variety, the 2022 Academy Awards will be held on March 27, delayed by exactly one month of its original scheduled date, February 27, with a return back to the Dolby Theatre. The move does not come as a complete surprise given that February will be a busy month for special events, including the 2022 Winter Olympics and the annual Super Bowl. Previous Oscar ceremonies have been held at the end of March and only recently for almost the last two decades, has the award show shifted earlier to either the beginning of that month or the end of February.
