Republican voters sorted through a variety pack of 13th District congressional candidates Tuesday, opting for Madison Gesiotto Gilbert to lead the party in the Nov. 8 general election.
Gilbert will face local Democratic powerhouse Emilia Sykes, who ran unopposed in her party’s primary.
The race was called about 10:45 p.m. for Gilbert, with more than 95% of the vote tallied.
Results in the 7th and 14th districts were decided early in the night, with no surprises.
7th Congressional District
In the 7th District, which spans Medina, Wayne and parts of Cuyahoga and Holmes counties, Republican Max Miller and Democrat Matthew Diemer sprinted to early leads and maintained their advantage.
Miller, a former aide to Donald Trump, was pulling nearly 70% of the vote over competitors Charlie Gaddis, Jonah Schulz and Anthony Leon Alexander.
Diemer, a media entrepreneur who has spent much of his career in China and Taiwan, captured about 50% of the vote early, with the other half being split by opponents Tristan Rader and Patrick Malley.
About 9:30 p.m., Miller was declared the Republican victor with more than half the vote left to count.
14th Congressional District
Republican veteran David Joyce cruised to victory, with the race called with just a quarter of the vote counted. By 9 p.m., Joyce was the choice of about 75% of Republican voters, leaving a quarter of the vote for challengers Patrick Awtrey and Bevin Cormack to split.
