In response to the 2022 midterm election results Ebony Twilley Martin, Greenpeace USA Co-Executive Director, said:
“The pro-climate, pro-planet voters of this country have stopped the most extreme anti-science, anti-democracy politicians from taking full control of our government. But there is no time to rest as new data shows that the oil and gas industry has spent an estimated average of $4.3 million for key Senate and $490,000 for key House seats supporting their back-pocket candidates.
“We need to fight like our lives depend on it and protect our communities, our children, our air, water, lands, wildlife, and climate. We must also remain vigilant in protecting and strengthening a democracy that preserves voting rights, protects public health, and pushes our government to act.
“The checks and balances of the US government may not protect us from the worst and most harmful bills that would damage our planet and democracy. The time is ripe for transformative change. People across the country recognize that we must demand a democracy by and for the people; access to public health resources; investment in Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities; a move to clean renewable energy; and secure jobs with healthcare benefits as we rebuild our economy.
