The Varieties of Democracy analysis, based at Sweden’s University of Gothenburg, shows a shift that may have the US losing its high-ranking “Liberal Democracy” status, with experts warning that the democracy of the country may be on the verge of collapse, as per CBC.
A Stark Warning for 2026
The head of the project, Staffan Lindberg claimed that, “If it continues like this, the United States will not score as a democracy when we release [next year’s] data,” as quoted by CBC. He also mentioned that, “If it continues like this, democracy [there] will not last another six months,” CBC quoted.
The analysis aggregated information from more than 4,200 experts in 202 nations, measuring 600 different attributes of democracy, reported CBC.
The Rise of Autocracies
The report revealed a troubling global trend that, for the first time in two decades, autocracies outnumbered democracies, with 91 countries identified as autocracies compared to 88 democracies, reported CBC.
