GANGWON, South Korea — Despite being outshot by a 42-17 overall margin, Team USA is headed to the gold-medal game of the 2024 Winter Youth Olympics after defeating Canada 6-5 on Tuesday in a shootout.
The match on Jan. 30 at Gangneung Hockey Centre in Gangwon marked the third straight game that the U.S. has played that resulted in a shootout. The team previously lost to Slovakia (5-4) and Czechia (6-5) in the preliminary round.
“Very proud of our team and their effort the entire game,” said head coach Joe Bonnett in a press release from USA Hockey. “All three lines and six defense contributed and Xavier Wendt had an outstanding game. The team chemistry is really coming together and we look forward to playing in the championship game against Czechia.”
