A highly anticipated return for Emma Hayes to her hometown will see the former Chelsea head coach lead FIFA’s No. 1-ranked USA women’s side into enemy territory as they meet England at Wembley Stadium for a friendly.
It will be an emotional homecoming for Hayes, but the match will be about much more than just her return to London.
Both sides are nursing injures to key attacking players, which presents an opportunity to give young stars an opportunity to shine. While the USWNT will be without its three-headed monster up front, England head coach Sarina Wiegman also must develop a plan to cover for a number of absentees.
The United States will be looking for revenge from their last trip to England’s most famous venue, where they fell 2-1 in October of 2022 in a tightly contested match that served as a harbinger of things to come for both nations.
The victory announced the Lionesses, recent European champions that previous summer, as contenders for the following year’s Women’s World Cup, where they would go on to reach the final. Meanwhile, the U.S. would suffer their worst-ever Women’s World Cup performance Down Under. Now that they’ve recovered by winning gold at the Olympics this year, the U.S. will hope to prove they’re still the team to beat globally.
