US equities drifted on Wednesday as trading remains relatively light ahead of the New Year, while the US dollar fell to a five-month low.
As of 10:53 am Eastern time, the S&P 500 was down 0.1 per cent. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 44 points, or 0.1 per cent. The Nasdaq composite fell 0.1 per cent.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 26.71 points, or 0.07 per cent, at the open to 37,518.62. The S&P 500 opened lower by 1.30 points, or 0.03 per cent, at 4,773.45. The Nasdaq Composite gained 15.09 points, or 0.10 per cent, to 15,089.66 at the opening bell.
The US dollar hit a five-month low on higher expectations of interest rate cut early next year by major central banks.
The US dollar fell 0.434 per cent against a basket of six major currencies to a level last seen on July 27. The euro rose by 0.59 per cent to $1.1107.
The yield on the 10-year treasury fell to 3.83 per cent from 3.90 per cent late Tuesday.
