Inflation has run rampant across the United States over the past year. The combination of supply-chain shortages following the COVID-19 lockdowns as well as the sanctions imposed on Russian oil imports has meant that the average citizen has had to pay more for basic amenities such as food and electricity.
In fact, the United States’ Federal Reserve has increased interest rates to 3.25 percent this September to combat 40-year high inflation rates. However, the burden of easing inflation has also fallen on the states themselves to mitigate the increased cost of living.
Illinois’ direct payments worth 300 dollars
The state of Illinois is currently providing its residents with two direct payments worth 300 dollars, each in the form of tax rebates.
The income and property tax rebates are part of Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker’s Family Relief Plan, which has also provided lower income families with grocery, gas, and school supply tax savings in order to the financial burden in these trying times.
“This 1.8 billion dollars in tax relief is possible because Democrats balanced the budget, eliminated the bill backlog, funded schools, fixed roads – and through responsible financial decision-making – still found ourselves with a one-time surplus,” Governor Pritzker said in a press statement.
“There are those who might have sent those funds straight back into the pockets of the 1 percent and big corporations instead of to working families, but that’s not what good government does.”
