NJ Transit has come to the rescue of riders who use seven A&C and Coach USA ONE Bus routes in Hudson and Essex counties when those private carriers discontinue those lines in October.
The emergency stabilization plan includes creates six new NJ Transit bus routes and extends an existing NJ Transit bus route that will serve the same bus stops as the A&C and Coach bus lines. The plan guarantees riders will have uninterrupted access to the bus service, NJ Transit officials said.
“NJ Transit understands how important this bus service is to all those who depend on it, particularly for those who rely on it as their sole source of mobility,” said Kevin S. Corbett, NJ Transit president and CEO. “We are extremely pleased to be able to deliver a plan that maintains service for all the customers impacted by the disappointing decision made by A&C and Coach USA to discontinue operating these seven bus routes.”
A&C announced in July it was ending three routes that serve the Jersey City’s westside. Coach USA/ONE Bus implemented service cuts on three Essex County routes in July, followed with a September announcement it was ending service.
NJ Transit’s plan comes as three Coach USA ONE bus routes were scheduled to be discontinued Oct. 4 and A&C service was scheduled to end on Oct. 31. Both companies cited financial losses, declining ridership that didn’t return after the coronavirus pandemic and expenses that weren’t covered by fares as reasons for ending service.
