Arioto Notches A Hit As Americans Move To 2-0
TOKYO, Japan – Day two of the Olympics featured one Cal representative as Valerie Arioto joined her teammates from USA Softball in securing their second straight shutout win.
Softball: USA 1, Canada 0
Monica Abbot pitched a one-hit shutout as the United States has yet to give up a run in either of the first two games of the tournament. Arioto started at first base and batted cleanup for the Americans. She had one hit as she hit a line drive single through the right side of the infield in the fifth inning. The USA scored their only run the batter before Arioto came up as Amanda Chidester singled to score Haylie McCleney. Arioto’s single followed as the USA loaded the bases in the fifth, but couldn’t add any insurance runs.
The United States is 2-0 in group play, with the top two teams in group play advancing straight to the gold medal game. Japan is also 2-0 through two games. Canada and Australia are both 1-1 while Italy and Mexico are 0-2 through the first two games.
Team USA will be off tomorrow as they prepare for game three of group play against Mexico, which will take place on Friday, July 23 at 10:30 p.m. PT.
There will be three more Bears in action on Thursday evening…
