SAN JOSE — Doordash intends to bring a new brick-and-mortar concept to a nine-decade-old building in downtown San Jose through a rental deal that bids to further bolster the increasingly lively SoFA district.
The online food ordering and food delivery company has leased a building in the South First Area, or SoFA neighborhood, of downtown San Jose where the company will open a site for its new DashMart service.
San Francisco-based Doordash confirmed that it is working to open a DashMart site at 431 S. First St., the company said through a spokesperson’s email reply to this news organization.
“It’s spectacular to get this deal in downtown San Jose,” said Mark Ritchie, president of Ritchie Commercial, a real estate firm. “It’s good to get these kinds of alternative uses like this in SoFA.”
SoFA is a section of downtown San Jose that’s dotted with restaurants, bars, nightclubs, cocktail lounges, entertainment spots, and live-performance sites.
“The lights are coming on in a building that has been vacant for a long time,” said Scott Knies, executive director of the San Jose Downtown Association. “This is a wonderful location.”
The building totals about 7,000 square feet and its principal owner is Richard Berg, a local real estate investor and Santa Cruz resident.
