The instant Bailey Anne Kennedy was named Miss Maryland USA at the start of this month, she made history. Never before had a transgender woman, Asian-American woman, military officer’s wife or 31-year-old vied for the sparkly tiara and won.
Kennedy had it all.
“For the longest time … a trans woman could not compete,” she said. “I just want to show everybody that we’re just like you. We’re just like your sister, your cousin, your mom, your dad or your brother.”
Thrust into the spotlight, the Montgomery County resident from Cambodia is eager to open up hearts — and doors for people of many different backgrounds. Already, she has become a shining example for others in the eyes of her supporters.
“Her win was a win for everyone who has dreamed an impossible dream. It sends the message that every person can live their life authentically and pursue every opportunity,” Samantha Shelton, a titleholder manager for Miss Maryland USA, told The Baltimore Sun in an email.
“Many don’t know what it is like to have to hide their gender identity, but we all have experienced a time when we did not feel comfortable or welcome in a certain environment,” Shelton added. “Her win has proven that there is a place for everyone to feel celebrated. She has encouraged people to live their truth, express themselves and their identity, and while there may be many losses, the win is worth the persistence.”
