Independence Day hints that the movie’s invading aliens had been hanging around for a long time. Independence Day celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, accompanied by Bill Pullman recreating his famed Presidential speech in a new Budweiser ad. The film is as much of an enduring summer blockbuster as there has ever been, and a staple of cable broadcasts and watch parties during Fourth of July festivities. While the movie wastes no time diving right into its global-scale invasion, it’s also something the aliens themselves had plotted for years beforehand.
This is revealed through Randy Quaid’s Russell Casse, an alcoholic crop-duster who claims to have been abducted by aliens years earlier. During a news broadcast showing Russell being arrested, he gravely intones “I was kidnapped by space aliens 10 years ago!“, following this claim up with “They did all kinds of experiments on me! They’ve been studying us for years, finding out our weaknesses!” Russell re-affirms his abduction took place a decade before the beginning of Roland Emmerich‘s movie with his son Miguel, claiming “I’ve been saying it for 10 d–n years!“, and later when he’s recruited as a pilot in the counter-strike against the aliens.
