EAST LANSING — The Michigan High School Athletic Association has confirmed sites for its winter sports championships, including an adjustment for the individual wrestling finals to allow more fans to attend after an increase in spectator limits took effect Friday as ordered by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
Those finals were originally announced for the Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo. Now, though, two of the divisions will be contested at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, allowing more fans, primarily immediate family. Previously, wrestlers were allowed just one spectator per participant.
In similar fashion, Van Andel and the Breslin Center in East Lansing will host additional events to allow more fans at the finals in girls and boys basketball and in competitive cheer. Each have capacities of more than 10,000 spectators, allowing them to host up to 750 per the MDHHS guidelines.
Basketball semifinals will be split by divisions between Breslin and Van Andel, in part to provide for most attendance but also to keep those rounds scheduled to just two locations instead of more.
