The 49ers managed to get into the postseason without left tackle Trent Williams healthy for the clinching game. He still wasn’t in practice as the team began their on-field preparations for a wild-card matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.
Williams, who’s dealing with an elbow sprain he suffered in Week 17, didn’t practice at all in the lead up to the season finale. He was absent again Wednesday which isn’t good news, but it’s also not necessarily a sign of his future availability.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday said Williams was doing better than he was Sunday when he was unable to play. There isn’t any certainty about his status, but Shanahan is hoping Williams will be able to suit up in Dallas.
Here’s the full practice participation report from Wednesday:
DL Nick Bosa (not injury related – resting player)
TE George Kittle (not injury related – resting player)
C Alex Mack (not injury related – resting player)
RB Elijah Mitchell (knee)
LT Trent Williams (elbow)
It’s surprising Kittle doesn’t get more days off given how banged up he’s been. Mitchell’s absence isn’t a huge surprise. Shanahan on Monday said the rookie RB would be on the same track he was on in Week 18. Expect him to return in a limited fashion and be ready by Sunday. Williams’ participation is less of a certainty though.
