Wildcard Chris O’Connell has secured a stunning upset as one of three successful Aussies on day four, but there’s been top-12 carnage for the women.
O’Connell became the first Australian man to beat a top-15 player in straight sets at the Australian Open since Pat Rafter in 2001.
Meanwhile Alex de Minaur is one win away from making the second week of his home Slam for the first time after taking care of Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak 6-4 6-4 6-2 on Rod Laver Arena.

On the women’s side three top-12 seeds – Garbine Muguruza, Anett Kontaveit and Elena Rybakina – are all out, the latter retiring hurt and the former two (who made the WTA finals last year) knocked out.
The 27-year-old O’Connell looked anything but fazed against world No.13 Diego Schwartzman, securing a spot in the third round of the Australian Open with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, 6-4 win.
It was a stunning career-best win for O’Connell against Schwartzman, who boasts over $11 million in career prize money compared to the Australian’s $753,733.
