The USMNT heads into the match with a confident hold on a 2022 World Cup berth after a 5-1 clobbering of Panama on Sunday. The U.S. men are in 2nd place with 25 points (tied with Mexico), while Costa Rica is 4th with 22. Costa Rica could tie the score by beating Team USA, but even then, they would have to win by at least 10 points — the current goal differential between the two teams — to supplant the USA.
It’s a big moment for the USMNT, who missed the World Cup for the first time in 32 years when it was last played in 2018.
That leaves Costa Rica likely destined for an inter-confederation playoff with the winner of the Oceania Football Confederation to determine which team advances to the World Cup.
