Two of the NFL’s premier franchises, the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers, meet on “Monday Night Football” in Week 8.
The Giants have the reputation of being an NFL standard bearer, but they haven’t exactly lived up to it in recent years. Sitting at 2-5 on the season entering Week 8, the Giants are in the cellar of the NFC East with a handful of problems. The biggest, though, is the one under center: Quarterback Daniel Jones has yet to find the consistency needed to operate Brian Daboll’s scheme at a high level, resulting in one of the NFL’s worst offensive attacks.
Jones has been under the microscope, but Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen each got a vote of confidence from owner John Mara prior to the Week 8 matchup. That could lead to a changing of the guard under center in the near future for the Giants, if the team’s brain trust is to remain intact.
Speaking of changing of the guard, the Steelers gambled on Russell Wilson in Week 7, and it paid out in a big way. After benching Justin Fields in favor of Wilson, Pittsburgh’s offense hummed in its 37-15 win over the Jets: Wilson threw for 264 yards and two touchdowns in his first action in a Steelers uniform, quieting down the critics who questioned Fields’ benching.
Now, the two maligned – unfairly or not – quarterbacks meet in front of a national audience.
