After earning All-American honors as a freshman, Texas’ Madison Booker has been a popular preseason pick to win the SEC’s highest individual honor – and the USA TODAY Sports Network voters agree.
Booker was voted SEC preseason player of the year by 11 writers who cover the league for the USA TODAY Sports Network, who voted on various preseason awards and All-SEC teams.
LSU’s Flau’jae Johnson was only one vote behind Booker, who was named to the Associated Press preseason All-American team. South Carolina’s Te-Hina Paopao and Kentucky’s Georgia Amoore also received a vote.
Johnson, who was the only unanimous first-team selection, averaged 14.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.1 steals and one block last season after winning SEC Freshman of the Year and a national title in 2023. Booker, a 6-foot-1 forward, averaged 16.5 points, five rebounds, five assists and 1.4 steals last season while playing out of position at point guard.
South Carolina coach Dawn Staley was selected to repeat as SEC Coach of the Year. Staley, who led the Gamecocks to an undefeated national championship last season, has won the award the last three seasons.
LSU is the only team with two first-team picks, but South Carolina leads the way with three total All-SEC selections.
The other LSU player on the first team was Aneesah Morrow, who was selected as preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year with Ole Miss forward Madison Scott. The All-SEC preseason first team is rounded out by Paopao and Amoore, who…
