As ransomware attacks are causing issues around the U.S. and globe, the Midland Business Alliance is working to protect local businesses.
Midland Information Technology Consortium (MITCON) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the MBA that provides technology solutions for non-profit organizations and small businesses operating in Midland and the Great Lakes Bay Region. This includes helping businesses with cyber security and threats, said Tracy Quinlan, executive director of MITCON.
Ransomware is a form of malware that encrypts device files makes them unusable, usually leading to the perpetrators to ask for ransom, according to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s website. Recently, Colonial Pipeline and meat processor JBS USA Holdings Inc. made headlines with ransomware attacks against them, with Colonial losing millions of dollars.
The Midland Daily News asked Quinlan how MITCON is working to help businesses address these ransomware threats and what they should do to prevent them.
