Best Buy, the consumer electronics retailer, has reportedly laid off a large number of its Geek Squad employees last week, reported 404 Media. Sources told that, former employees who lost their jobs were notified via email about a “work from home event” on Tuesday. However, the following day they received individual calls from their leadership informing them of their termination due to the company’s inability to afford their salaries.
Geek Squad is a group of workers who help customers with their computers and other devices.
The exact number of affected employees remains undisclosed. However, a laid-off worker who spoke to 404 Media stated that the layoffs are “definitely company wide and bigger than the cuts last summer.” The former employee, who had been with the company for more than half their life, expressed disappointment but acknowledged that the layoff might be for the best, as they had been struggling to secure 40-hour work weeks since the previous year.
Another former employee, who had worked with Best Buy and Geek Squad for over a decade, told 404 Media that the layoffs were extremely short notice and devastating.
An employee claimed that the company has been known to cut departments and services, sometimes by half, resulting in many areas running on skeleton crews. They also alleged that Best Buy had cut in-home agents for troubleshooting PC issues and is now pushing customers to use online chats to resolve their concerns.
