India has been facing criticism from policymakers in the US and West for trying to profit from the Ukraine war as it emerged as one of the key buyers of cheap Russia oil in the wake of Western sanctions. External affairs minister S Jaishankar had, time and again, defended India’s purchase of Russia oil, saying it helped contain global inflation.
At the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, Jaishankar again reaffirmed India’s position and determination to continue purchasing Russian oil despite the sanctions imposed on Moscow due to its military engagement with Ukraine, asserting that this decision should not concern others.
“Why should that be a problem? If I am smart enough to have multiple options, you should be admiring me. Is that a problem for others? I don’t think so, especially in this case. We try to articulate the various challenges and influences that nations face. It’s very challenging to maintain a one-dimensional relationship,” Jaishankar said. During his joint appearance with US secretary of state Antony Blinken, Jaishankar elaborated on how India is navigating its diplomatic relationships with both the US and Russia amidst the intensifying diplomatic tensions between the two major powers.
