Created in 1997, the CalWORKs program was a response to the federal welfare reform legislation of 1996. It was created by the federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. CalWORKs offers cash grants and even job services for families with a low income. It is a program overseen by the state Department of Social Services. The grant amounts are actually adjusted for family size, income level, and the region where the family is located. There are high-cost counties in the state of California, they receive grants that go up by 4.9% higher than people who live in lower-cost counties. For instance, a family of threee at a county where the cost is higher with no other earned income is currently getting $925 per month. Lower-cost region families get $878 per month.
Will CalWORKs increase in 2024?
All that was back in 2022, but during that same year came a significant increase to 10% that will continue from now until 2024. With this percentage, every struggling family from every income level will get $860 monthly if they apply. Family size doesn’t matter either, they are all getting the same amount.
