Over the past year, several cities and states in the United States of America have trialled a variety of Universal Basic Income (UBI) programs.
Now, as these stimulus programs continue to expand across the country, Phoenix in Arizona could be the next city to have a UBI plan.
At the very end of November, the Phoenix City Council approved a plan to give out monthly payments to approximately 1,000 low-income families.
Who is eligible for the monthly checks of 1,000 dollars in Phoenix?
Given that this is a trial of Universal Basic Income, it’ll only be around 1,000 families at this first stage who’ll benefit from this money.
The families will be selected through a lottery system and there are certain eligibility criteria to even be entered into the Phoenix UBI lottery.
Those eligible for entering the lottery are low-income families who have at least one child and wh make 80 percent or less of the area median income.
In the city, 80 percent of the area median income for a family of four currently works out at 63,200 dollars per year.
The City Council has also explained that families that have previously applied for rental assistance, as well as residents at city-owned public housing, will also qualify.
How does the Phoenix Universal Basic Income program work?
