Fresh estimates from Nato show that Russia has lost up to between 7,000 to 15,000 of its troops in Ukraine in four weeks of conflict so far, equivalent to what the Soviet Union lost in a decade-long war in Afghanistan.
Joe Biden and European leaders are set to start a Nato summit in Brussels today to discuss the Russian invasion and bolster support for Ukraine.
Marking a month since Russia began its military offensive, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky asked for a global show of support for the besieged country in a video address.
“Come to your squares, your streets. Make yourselves visible and heard,” Mr Zelensky said in an emotional address shot near the presidential offices in the evening in Kyiv.
“Say that people matter. Freedom matters. Peace matters. Ukraine matters,” he said.
Pressing on the Nato alliance for more support to help Ukraine win the war against Russia, he said: “We ask that the alliance declare that it will fully assist Ukraine to win this war, clear our territory of the invaders and restore peace in Ukraine.”
